August has been very peaceful in regards to Sue and her daughter Holly’s wedding. To be fair I have hardly seen or heard from her which is very unusual but as soon as August clicked over to September she has not been off the ‘phone, e mail or text!

You may, or may not remember that we were going to go to the Church after we saw the florist to talk about the flower arrangements for the pews and altar etc. Well we did get there but Sue had muddled up the dates and we arrived in the throws of the summer fayre! As you can imagine the Church Wardens did not want to talk to us about wedding flowers as they were swamped with visitors and I didn’t feel we could leave without at least having a look round and buying something – we bought far too much from the cake stall which was loaded with the most delicious cakes and pastries and has unfortunately done our waistlines no good at all!

But to move on – we did go back to talk the arrangements over with the Warden and flower arranging ladies. I must say they are a really talented bunch and nothing was too much trouble for them. They showed us some pictures of other weddings they had arranged the flowers for and some of the displays were breathtaking. They will do the pew ends, the font, the altar and the arch leading into the church – which is a pretty huge undertaking. Again they mentioned that flowers can be dyed to any colour we wanted or we could buy what was in season if preferred. They will get the flowers from their usual supplier or we can get them ourselves and they will do the rest. I think they should take charge of sorting them out as Sue’s head will be all over the place and flowers are not her thing. Hazel mentioned that as we were not the only wedding taking place on the day, she would have a word with the other couple to see if there was any way we could share the cost of the flowers and maybe choose something suitable for both. We thought this was an excellent idea and had thought it ourselves but felt a bit mean to mention it, so hats off to Hazel!

I think I am the flavour of the month with my friend Sue (her daughter is getting married next year) ever since I mentioned about the chair covers I have been invited to contribute to nearly every aspect of the wedding!

Well it was bridal flowers this weekend and despite my really bad hay fever, I went along to a local florist for the first consultation. I must admit once I got my sneezing under control and could concentrate I really enjoyed myself. We had done our homework as well, we took along a photograph of Holly in her wedding dress (we had taken the photograph when Holly had made the final decision – another story), the bridesmaids photographs and samples of the material. This all proved to be invaluable information for the florist as the shape and design of the dress dictates the size of the bouquet and which flowers would be most suitable. There are all kinds of things that can be added to the bouquet to make it sparkle and I am sure Holly will include these in her flowers.

The florist was able to tell us what flowers would be in season, which reflects on the cost, and also told us that fresh flowers could be dyed! Well, I never knew that, but apparently you just put the desired colour in the water they are standing in and they suck it up and change colour. Amazing!

The bridesmaid’s flowers are a smaller version of Holly’s so were quite easy to sort, although there was a tussle between mini bouquets and wrist posies.
We looked through the florists' portfolio, which was so helpful as neither Holly or Sue have a clue about flowers (you should see her garden) and after half an hour we were sorted.

Although Kate Middleton had a very small bouquet, Holly has opted for quite a large one and she is unsure whether she wants to throw it at the end of day. The florist (bless her) stepped in again and told Holly she could have a much smaller one made, which mimicked the original, which could be easily thrown to her waiting friends. A much better suggestion as the large one might take someone’s eye out!

We’re off to meet the Church Warden next week to discuss the decorations for the Church. I’ll let you know how we get on!
