Just out of curiosity I've been looking into where the custom of wedding rings comes from. It's very hard to tell exactly, but Pliny wrote about rings being sent as pledges to the bride in 1st century Rome. They were made of iron though, with a precious stone set into it and apparently the hardness of the iron and stone signified the intended length of the commitment.
I'm glad we can have nicer looking metals now! Platinum is still everywhere in the wedding world, but just like dresses the choice is huge and traditional gold is still just as popular. Joe is interested in titanium wedding rings, I think he likes the thought of it being resistant to acids and all kinds of James Bond-esque situations.
We'll need to try on any rings we choose when our hands are both hot and cold as fingers change size and I don't want to find that it won't fit on the hot summer wedding day! If we want the wedding rings engraved that'll take about 3 weeks apparently.
Something that could be very romantic is if we make each other's wedding rings. There are specialist companies out there that help you to make the main part of it and then they finish it professionally so they don't look a mess. I can hear the Blue Peter jokes now….
